GWA Juniors at State Tournament: Final 8 Teams in PA Playing in Western PA
Pitching, Defense, Hitting, and Baserunning--the Juniors showed it all in an 11-1 win over Weston Park at The Shoe to capture the Section 5 title. Tino Romanelli pitched a gem and Jake Granteed provided the offensive punch as GWA dominated from start to finish. Jake showed up for the pre-game warmups wearing a fake mustache--but was all business between the lines as he belted a home run over the left field fence and bounced one over for a ground rule double. Freddie Cefalo finished the job with a hit in the fifth that made the final score 11-1 and ended the game.
Congratulations to the team and the coaches: Tom Romanelli, Fred Cefalo, and Chip Borton. Everyone did a fabulous job. And this is only the beginning. Let's win it all!
GWA Seniors Knocked out of Tournament 16-14 (July 24)
Nick O'Brien hit a three run homer and Kyle Colarusso hit a solo shot to center, but there wasn't enough pitching and defense to keep down a good Weston Park team.
Juniors Fly District Flag With 4-3 Win over Back Mountain (July 16th)
The GWA Juniors proved that you can be in any game when you have good pitching and good defense. Erik Walkowiak pitched six strong innings and Colin "Bulldog" Herron, closed the deal with a scoreless seventh as the Greater Wyoming Area Junior Teener team defeated Back Mountain, 4-3. These two teams tangled three times this year--all close games. Back Mountain jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game, but as usual, the Juniors clawed their way back to tie it 2-2 in the fourth. The Juniors added a pair in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Walkowiak pitched out of a no out bases loaded jam in the sixth, only yielding one run. Colin Herron came in to pitch the seventh inning and kept the ball low and away to seal the victory. Jake Granteed had two hits for GWA. Bryant Clark had a big double. Tino Romanelli, Marty Michaels, Erik Walkowiak and Jake Wysocki each had singles.
The Juniors move on to play next Thursday. See the Section 5 Tournament Brackets here.

Corey Furman Named to Times Leader Wyoming Valley Conference All-Stars: "To be sure, Wyoming Area's wholesale turnaround ws a team effort from top to bottom. But it certaintly diesn't hurt to have a player as dedicated on and off the field as Furman, who will join the Division I college ranks of Bucknell. He hit above .400 and was strong at shortstop for the Warriors, who reached the D2-3A semifinals." Times Leader
The Wyoming Area Diamond Club and Pride Mobility are teaming up to sponsor a softball Home Run Derby on Sunday, July 18th. The open event will be held from noon to 6 pm at Atlas Field on Susquehanna Ave and Erie St in Exeter. The cost for adults is $10 while the cost for students is $5. No pre-registration is required—just show up between noon and 6 pm.
A 230-foot temporary fence will be erected within the Atlas baseball field. Participants may use their own pitcher, or one will be supplied by the derby organizers. Each participant will hit until they record 10 outs. Any swing resulting in a fair ball over the 230-foot fence will be a home run. The winner will receive a trophy on Sunday at the end of the competition. Food and refreshments will be served throughout the day and a 50/50 drawing will be held.
On Thursday, July 22, there will be a follow-on event that will involve a home run derby competition between Wyoming Area and Pride Mobility. VARSITY BASEBALL RESULTS
Warriors Season Ends with 13-3 Loss to Tunkhannock (June2) Give Tunkhannock credit--they were the better team. Their superior pitching, hitting, and defense added up to a five inning 13-3 thumping of the Warriors. It was shaping up like a good game with the Warriors taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. After stranding five runners in the first three innings, the Warriors finally caught a break when the Tunkhannock second baseman made an error on a ground ball hit by PJ Bone, allowing two runs to score.
Andre Harris pitched a strong first three innings, giving up a single run in both the second and third. Sophomore Lefty Dylan Maloney entered the game in the bottom of the fourth, but didn't quite have the same luck as he had in the past against Tunkhannock. Maloney couldn't make it through the inning and was relieved by Chris Murhpy. The Tigers tallied for 5 runs in the fourth and took a commanding 7-3 lead.
The wheels came off for the Warriors in the fifth as the Tigers tallied for five more runs, ending the game with the mercy rule.
Although it was a tough way to end--this was a baseball season that everyone will remember for a long time. The Warrior Baseball team provided plenty of thrills starting with those big victories in West Virginia and ending with that comeback playoff win against North Pocono. Who could have predicted that a team that won only one game last year would be playing in the District semi-finals? Congratulations to the players and the coaching staff for a making the 2010 season one to remember. Read More...
